Important Visitors

A delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headed by Massimo Aparo, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards, made a working visit to UMP JSC on October 16.

The purpose was to see the LEU Bank, Ulba-FA LLP fuel assembly plant, as well as Uranium Operations.

During this visit Massimo Aparo was accompanied by Haroldo Barroso Jr., Director of the IAEA Safeguards Department, Chris Gazze, Section Head, Safeguards Department, as well as Kuat Nurgaliev, Managing Director for Security at NAC Kazatomprom.

Before that, the important guests came to see the National Nuclear Center located in Kurchatov. Upon arrival to Ulba Metallurgical Plant they met with Executive Board Chairman and top managers, discussed the goals of the visit and got acquainted with the history and work of UMP.

Then representatives of the IAEA and Kazatomprom visited Low-Enriched Uranium Bank, where Alexander Khodanov, Sales Director, told about the activities, security system and other aspects of the facility operation. Then followed a visit to Ulba-FA LLP, where Vladimir Vakhnenko, General Director, gave a tour describing the full cycle of fuel assembly production.

Visit to Uranium Operations was the next stage of the program, where the guests got to know about pellets and powders manufacturing, as well as about the area for processing hard-to-recover uranium-containing materials. Konstantin Kuzmin, Uranium Operations Director, introduced them to the subtleties of technological processes and answered their questions.

At the end of the visit, Massimo Aparo thanked the employees and management of the plant for arrangements and opportunity to visit the LEU Bank and production facilities. He especially noted that he has been impressed with Ulba-FA plant and supported extending the high appreciation of the IAEA to the company for its work.
