Digital Quality Control
Previously, fuel pellets at UMP JSC’s Uranium Operations facility were inspected manually using a microscope. Today, this process is fully digitized.
Werth ScopeCheck FB DZ coordinate measuring machine is used to measure geometric parameters. Using a video measuring system, it creates a 3D model of the pellet surface and automatically calculates key parameters: diameter, dish depth and chamfer dimensions. The equipment is also used to inspect press tools and assess the degree of deterioration.
The enterprise specialists have developed their own fixtures and software, enabling the coordinate measuring machine to measure up to 80 pellets from a batch simultaneously, whereas previously each one was inspected separately.
The introduction of digital technologies has increased the velocity and accuracy of measurements tenfold. Previously, it took up to 9 hours to inspect a single batch. Now, the data is available within seconds.
Digitization has improved the quality of inspection and significantly streamlined the workload of specialists.
