Chernobyl Spring Echo

27.04.2026

On the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, we remember not only the scale of the tragedy but also the people who participated in the liquidation of its consequences. The disaster of April 26, 1986, became one of the largest of the 20th century and required the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of specialists from across the Soviet Union.

More than 526,000 people took part in the liquidation efforts, including over 32,000 from Kazakhstan and more than 3,000 from the East Kazakhstan region. Among them were employees of Ulba Metallurgical Plant, whose expertise in chemistry and radiation safety was particularly in demand.

These specialists worked in conditions of elevated radiation levels: they conducted reconnaissance, identified contaminated areas, performed decontamination of territories and facilities, and ensured control and order. Their task was to contain the consequences of the accident and reduce its impact on people and environment.
Today, liquidators from those years continue to work at Ulba Metallurgical Plant: Pavel Kashperko, Sergey Mekhnin, Sergey Shmurygin, and Viktor Semyonov.

In honor of this commemorative date, a ceremony was held at UMP Exhibition and Information Center to honor the liquidation participants.

Chernobyl remains a reminder of the scale of technogenic risks and, at the same time, an example of the courage of the people who took the brunt of the disaster's consequences.
